A feathered guest in Riverside

Community cricket players at Windsor Park in Riverside, near Launceston, have encountered an unusual challenge during their recent matches. A masked lapwing has claimed a nesting site directly on the playing surface, remaining steadfast as athletes compete around it. Rather than being deterred by the ongoing games, the bird has continued to incubate its eggs in the heart of the ground.

Adapting to the situation

Local cricket enthusiasts have embraced the presence of the protected bird, even granting it a humorous nickname, "Faf Swoop Plessis," in reference to the former South African international captain. Ground staff have adjusted their maintenance routines accordingly, carefully mowing the grass around the nesting area to ensure the bird remains undisturbed while matches proceed elsewhere on the oval. The lapwing, known in the region for its protective nature during nesting season, appears entirely unfazed by the activity nearby. The community remains committed to protecting the nest, allowing the resident plover to carry on with its incubation process uninterrupted despite the busy schedule of weekend sports at the facility.
