Atanu's Unbeaten 101 Sinks Calcutta Challengers Despite Ashutosh Maurya and Golok Bera's Fighting Fifties
Shapoorji Orcas's Atanu smashes an unbeaten 101 off 30 balls to set up 196/5, and CC's brave reply built on Ashutosh Maurya's 92 and Golok Bera's unbeaten 50 falls 25 runs short
Calcutta Challengers came up just short in a genuine six-hitting contest, going down to Shapoorji Orcas by 25 runs after chasing a mammoth 197. The difference in the end was one extraordinary innings — Atanu’s unbeaten 101 off just 30 balls — but CC refused to fold quietly. Ashutosh Maurya played the innings of his captaincy with a scintillating 92, and Golok Bera finished unbeaten on a rapid fifty, dragging the chase agonisingly close before time ran out.
Atanu's Century Blitz Powers Shapoorji Orcas to 196/5
Sent in to bat, Shapoorji Orcas lost early wickets cheaply — aurangzeb rashid (1) and ABHISHEK KUMAR (10) both fell inside the first two overs, with Golok Bera and Sauvik Chaudhury sharing the early damage. Saif Ali (13) followed soon after, leaving Orcas 25 for 3 and CC firmly on top. Then Atanu walked to the crease and completely rewrote the match.
Batting through to the end of the innings, Atanu smashed an unbeaten 101 off 30 balls, striking 4 fours and 13 sixes at a strike rate of 336.67 — one of the most destructive innings CC have faced all season. He found willing company from Anindya Hazra, who chipped in with an unbeaten 40 off 22 (2 fours, 4 sixes), and Biswajeet Dey, who cracked a brisk 20 off 12 in between. Between them, Orcas piled on 171 runs in the final 10 overs alone, racing to 196 for 5 in 13 overs at a run rate of over 15 an over.
Golok Bera (2/41) and Sauvik Chaudhury (2/37) were CC’s most successful bowlers on an afternoon where the bat dominated almost everywhere, with Debangshu chipping in with the wicket of Biswajeet Dey off a sharp catch behind the stumps.
101* off 30 balls, 13 sixes. Atanu turned a 25-for-3 rescue act into a 196-run total almost single-handedly.
Ashutosh Maurya's 92 Off 40 Keeps CC in the Hunt
Chasing a daunting 197, CC lost hamzad (17 off 5, including 2 sixes) early to a sharp catch, but Ashutosh Maurya immediately signalled intent. Anchoring the innings from the second over, the CC captain played with remarkable freedom and control in equal measure, striking 4 fours and 10 sixes in a breathtaking knock of 92 off just 40 balls at a strike rate of 230.00. He and Golok Bera came together after Paul Zomi (9) fell at 37 for 2, and the pair proceeded to put on a match-defining stand of 132 runs, dragging CC from a precarious position right back into the contest and keeping the required rate within reach deep into the innings.
Ashutosh was eventually stumped for 92 with CC on 169 for 3 in the 12th over — agonisingly close to what would have been a memorable century of his own — but by then he had done the heavy lifting that gave CC any chance at all.
92 off 40 balls, 10 sixes. Ashutosh Maurya went toe-to-toe with Atanu's onslaught and very nearly got there.
Golok Bera's Unbeaten Fifty Falls Agonisingly Short
With the equation tightening and partners falling around him, Golok Bera kept swinging. His unbeaten 50 off 26 balls, laced with 1 four and 6 sixes at a strike rate of 192.31, was every bit the equal of his earlier bowling effort with the ball — a genuine all-round performance across both innings. Golam Masud (1) fell in the final over, and with too many runs still needed off too few deliveries, CC closed on 171 for 4 in their 13 overs, coming up 25 runs short of a remarkable chase.
2/41 with the ball, 50* with the bat. Golok Bera's all-round effort simply wasn't enough to overhaul Atanu's masterpiece.
It was a match that had virtually everything — a genuine batting collapse, a one-man century blitz, and a fighting reply built on two outstanding individual knocks. Shapoorji Orcas won it in the end, but Calcutta Challengers leave with plenty of credit for a performance built on Ashutosh Maurya and Golok Bera refusing to give the game up as a contest.
