In an 80-ball-a-side game, Calcutta Challengers made 235/6 and beat Deadly Bulls, who finished on 216/9, by 19 runs. Wicketkeeper Hamzad was named Man of the Match for a 54 off 16 balls with five fours and five sixes that set the tone, and Saif Ali, Tanmay Karmakar, Golok Bera and Paul Zomi all kept the scoring going. With the ball, Debangshu took 3/31, but Deadly Bulls were never out of it, with Hemanshu Singh hitting 53 off 16 and Moly adding 38 off 13.
Hamzad's 54 Off 16 Sets the Tone
Hamzad and Tanmay Karmakar put on 67 in 22 balls for the first wicket. Hamzad hit five fours and five sixes at a strike rate of 337.50 before he was caught by Hemanshu Singh off Moly. Tanmay made 32 off 14 with four sixes and was run out by Deepak Sharma at 112/2 in 36 balls, after adding 45 with Saif Ali for the second wicket.
Saif Ali, Paul Zomi and Golok Bera Keep the Pace Up
Saif Ali struck 39 off 13 (two fours and four sixes) before he was caught by Saikat Chatterjee off Moly at 132/3. Paul Zomi (33 off 13, four sixes) and Golok Bera then added 70 for the fourth wicket. Zomi was caught by Saurav Singh off Deepak Sharma at 202/4 in 66 balls, and Golok Bera made 43 off 18 (three fours and four sixes) before he was caught and bowled by Aditya Singh at 234/5.
Anindya Hazra hit 22 off 8 with three sixes and was run out off the final ball. The Calcutta Challengers innings contained 24 sixes and 11 extras. Moly was the best of the Deadly Bulls bowlers with 2/49 in 20 balls, and Saurav Singh (0/40 in 10 balls) and Atanu (0/25 in 10 balls) were the other front-line options.
Atanu, Hemanshu Singh and Moly Keep Deadly Bulls in the Hunt
Deadly Bulls started at pace. Atanu smashed 35 off 9 with four fours and three sixes before he was caught by Saif Ali off Debangshu at 50/3 in 14 balls, and Saswat added a 3-ball 12 with two sixes. After Vivek Singh was bowled by Golok Bera at 59/4, captain Hemanshu Singh took charge. He and Aditya Singh added 56 for the fifth wicket, and Hemanshu struck 53 off 16 with seven sixes (strike rate 331.25) before he was caught and bowled by Samrat at 115/5 in 38 balls.
Deadly Bulls kept pace with the rate even as wickets fell. Deepak Sharma made 21 off 8 with three sixes before he was caught by sub fielder Golam Masud off Tanmay Karmakar, and Sumit was run out by Golok Bera and Hamzad at 162/8. Then Moly smashed 38 off 13 with four sixes and added 42 with Saurav Singh in just 15 balls before he was caught by Debangshu off SURAJ PRAHLADKA at 204/9 in the 74th ball. Saurav Singh (11*) and Piyush Kumar (10*) added 12 in the last six balls, but Deadly Bulls finished 19 short on 216/9.
Debangshu's Three Wickets and the Bowling Group
Debangshu took 3/31 in 15 balls, including seven dot balls, removing Atanu, Soumitra Bagui and Saswat in the opening 14 balls. Samrat took 2/26 in 10 balls, dismissing Hemanshu Singh and Aditya Singh, Tanmay Karmakar returned 1/18 in 10 balls and Ashutosh Maurya conceded just 18 in 8 balls. SURAJ PRAHLADKA (1/43), Golok Bera (1/48) and Paul Zomi (0/32 in 7 balls) were hit around by the Deadly Bulls batters, who struck 20 sixes in the innings, but the early wickets proved decisive.
Looking Ahead
Hamzad's 54 off 16, Saif Ali's 39, Golok Bera's 43 and Tanmay Karmakar's quick 32 took Calcutta Challengers to 235/6, and Debangshu's three early wickets gave them just enough of a cushion. Deadly Bulls can take plenty of heart from Hemanshu Singh's 53 off 16, Atanu's 35 off 9 and Moly's 38 off 13 — between the two sides, the match produced 44 sixes.
