Hamzad's 84 off 27 Balls Torches Newtown Kings: CC Chase 158 in 9.1 Overs
Miraj's three-wicket burst and a tight collective bowling effort set the platform as Hamzad's 11-six masterclass settled the contest before the halfway mark
It was a match that had everything — twin fifties from Newtown Kings Legend, a disciplined collective bowling effort from Calcutta Challengers, and then one of the most brutal batting displays you will see at any level. Hamzad walked in and took apart a 158-run target almost single-handedly, blasting 84 off just 27 deliveries with 11 sixes and 3 fours at a strike rate of 311.11. Newtown Kings Legend gave everything they had — but no total is safe when Hamzad is in that kind of form. Calcutta Challengers won by 5 wickets, finishing at 163 in just 9.1 overs, with 23 balls to spare.
Newtown Kings Build Through Twin Fifties
Newtown Kings Legend came out swinging. Openers Mohabbat and Ranjit Barman put on 32 in just 2 overs before Tanmay Karmakar struck, sending Ranjit back for 5. Victor Mondal (6) fell soon after at 39, but Mohabbat kept going, timing the ball beautifully and taking the attack on. When he reached his half-century — 53 off 25 balls with 6 fours and 3 sixes — it was clear this innings had teeth.
But the real highlight was Usman Gazi. Walking in at number four, he immediately played at a different gear. His 52 off 23 balls was a breathless assault — 7 fours and 3 sixes at a strike rate of 226.09. The Mohabbat-Usman partnership built Newtown Kings into a formidable position. When Miraj finally cleaned up Mohabbat at 115 in the 8th over, and then tore through the middle order with two more quick wickets, the damage was partly contained. JOY(Dhana) chipped in with a useful 7, and Usman was eventually dismissed at 133 in the 10th over, ending a 94-run contribution to the total from his bat alone.
Miraj finished with 3/16 in 2 overs at an economy of 8.00, a spell that changed the momentum of the first innings. Kunal Gupta was the most economical of CC’s bowlers, returning 1/27 in 3 overs at 9.00 and providing the control that Miraj’s blitz needed. Tanmay Karmakar picked up 2 wickets and Golam Masud chipped in with 1, as CC held Newtown Kings to 157/8 in 13 overs — a strong total, but not safe when Hamzad opens the batting.
Two fifties. Eight wickets. One hundred and fifty-seven runs. Newtown Kings Legend had done their job. But Hamzad hadn’t batted yet.
Miraj: The Bowler Who Changed the Game
Miraj’s spell deserves special attention. With Newtown Kings threatening to go past 170, he came on and immediately put the squeeze on. Removing Mohabbat at 115 was the crucial breakthrough — dismissing a set batsman who had already hit 6 fours and 3 sixes required skill and nerve. Miraj followed it up by removing two more batsmen inside the next couple of overs, finishing his two-over allocation with those 3 wickets for just 16 runs. Seven of his 12 deliveries were dot balls. At a point when the game could have slipped to 180+, Miraj’s intervention kept it at a chaseable 157. He would then contribute 14 with the bat as CC neared the target.
Hamzad: An Innings That Defies Description
Chasing 158, CC needed a fast start. What they got was something else entirely. Hamzad opened and from the very first over it was obvious this was not going to be a close chase. The ball disappeared to the boundary and beyond in rapid succession — 11 sixes, three of them in a single over off Biltu who conceded 64 runs in 2.1 overs. Soumya Pradhan (21 off 8) and Golam Masud (24 off 8, 3 sixes) provided excellent support at the other end, both striking at well above 260. The runs came so fast that by the time Hamzad was dismissed at 141 in the 7th over, CC needed just 17 more off 5.2 overs with 5 wickets in hand.
Hamzad’s 84 off 27 balls contained shots of every variety — pulls over midwicket, drives launched over the sight screen, slog sweeps that cleared long-on by metres. Only Suman managed to dismiss him, claiming 3 wickets to show that Newtown Kings fought hard. Mohabbat picked up 2 wickets and kept his economy under 10, which was respectable given the assault his side was facing.
84 off 27. Eleven sixes. A strike rate of 311. That is not batting — that is an act of collective will made visible.
Golam Masud: The Understated All-Rounder
Golam Masud had one of those quietly decisive matches that only the scorecard captures fully. With the ball he delivered 3 tight overs and took a crucial wicket for 41, helping CC keep Newtown Kings from accelerating in the death. With the bat he came in at number three and immediately seized the moment — 24 off 8 balls with 3 sixes at a strike rate of 300. His partnership with Hamzad through the middle of the chase accelerated the run rate to a point where the match was effectively over by the 6th over. In a side full of match-winners, Masud quietly contributed to both phases of the game.
The Chase Completed
After Hamzad’s dismissal at 141, there was a brief wobble — Miraj (14 off 8) was caught, and Ashutosh Maurya fell for 0 off consecutive balls in the 8.4th over to make it 151/5. But with only 7 needed off more than 4 overs, Vivek@Alone (8* off 3, 1 six) and Tanmay Karmakar (6* off 2, 1 six) finished it off with ease, taking CC past 158 on the first ball of the 10th over. CC won by 5 wickets with 23 balls remaining, completing a 163-run chase in just 9.1 overs.
