Nasir's SR-406 Blitz Builds CC's 234, But Goon and Layek's Fight Gave the Rippers Real Hope
CC won by 28 runs — yet Sampad Goon (58 off 17) and Sachin Layek (53 off 20) made it a contest worthy of the occasion
This was a match that produced cricket of the highest local order — two sides swinging hard and neither holding back. Calcutta Challengers posted a staggering 234/4 in 13 overs, driven by one of the most explosive innings this circuit has ever seen. But Raktabeej Rippers refused to go quietly — two batters in particular put together knocks that deserved to be on the winning side. In the end, CC's superior firepower carried the day by 28 runs, but the Rippers gave everything they had.
Hamzad Launches, Nasir Detonates: CC's Opening Fury
Hamzad came out swinging and never relented. His 51 off 19 deliveries — seven fours, three sixes, strike rate 268 — set an early tone that the Rippers had no answer for. He fell at 64/1, but the damage was done. Vishal Jaiswal (9) held steady at the other end, and then Nasir Uddin Baidya arrived. What happened next belongs in a different category of cricket entirely. Nasir made 65 off 16 balls — nine sixes, two fours, a strike rate of 406.25. He reached his fifty in 12 deliveries. Every delivery was an event. The Rippers' bowlers tried pace, tried slower balls, tried full, tried short — Nasir hit them all. Joydip Pramanick (2/24) was the pick of the Raktabeej bowling attack and deserves credit for maintaining discipline under relentless assault, but on this night there was simply no stopping Nasir.
Nine sixes in sixteen balls. A strike rate of 406. There are innings, and then there is what Nasir Uddin Baidya did today.
CC Keep the Foot Down: Masud, Debangshu and Biswajeet
With the platform already sky-high, CC showed no mercy. Masud Rana (41 off 19, five sixes, SR 216) extended the carnage before retiring hurt — a cameo that would have been the talking point of any other match. Captain Debangshu (24 off 12, SR 200) kept the momentum in the middle overs, and Biswajeet Dey provided the perfect closing act: 28 not out off 8 balls, three sixes, a strike rate of 350. Total: 234/4. The Rippers needed 235 from 78 balls.
Raktabeej Rippers Refuse to Fold: Goon and Layek's Heroic Stand
A lesser side would have crumbled in the face of that target. The Rippers did not. Subhojeet Chhatterjee (20 off 10, three sixes) gave the chase an aggressive start before CC's bowlers intervened. What came next, though, was something special from the Raktabeej middle order.
Sampad Goon played arguably the innings of the match — from the opposition's perspective. His 58 off 17 deliveries (five fours, six sixes, SR 341.18) was explosive, intelligent cricket. He didn't just hit; he picked his spots and cleared the ropes with authority. Sachin Layek was just as impressive: 53 off 20 balls, five fours, five sixes at 265 — a knock full of intent and class. Together, Goon and Layek hauled the Rippers to 174/5 in 10.3 overs, and for a few breathless overs the chase was alive. With 61 needed from 15 balls, it was still theoretically possible. This is what proper T20 cricket looks like.
Sampad Goon’s 58 off 17 and Sachin Layek’s 53 off 20 — in a losing cause — were two of the finest innings played against CC all season. They deserved more from their team.
Suraj Prahladka and the CC Bowlers Hold the Line
Keeping a 235-run target intact requires the same focus that scored them. SURAJ PRAHLADKA (2/32 in 3 overs) struck at crucial moments, including the key wicket of Subhojeet Chhatterjee that slowed the chase's opening momentum. Biswajeet Dey (1/12), P D (1/23) and Ashutosh Maurya (1/46) all contributed, tightening the lines as the Rippers' lower order came in. Despite Goon and Layek's heroics, the bottom of the Raktabeej batting couldn't sustain the required rate. They finished at 206/8 — a fine score in any other match, but 28 short of the mountain CC had built.
