In a match that was decided within the first seven overs, Calcutta Challengers produced one of their most dominant batting performances of the season, dismantling Newtown Knights by a comprehensive 95 runs. A total of 246 in 13 overs — built on a jaw-dropping century and a blazing middle-order assault — left the Knights with a mountain too steep to climb. And when Newtown came to bat, a clinical CC bowling unit led by the outstanding Shuvo Das and the ice-cold Samrat made sure they never got close.

The Rescue Act: Kunal Gupta Steadies the Ship

Calcutta Challengers were rocked early. Akash Ranjan fell without scoring in the very first over, and captain Ashutosh Maurya followed for just 7, leaving CC in trouble at 13 for 2 inside two overs. It was a moment that demanded composure, and wicket-keeper Kunal Gupta delivered exactly that. Refusing to panic, he read the conditions, absorbed the pressure and gradually shifted the momentum. His 42 off 26 balls, featuring three fours and three sixes at a strike rate of 161.54, built the platform that allowed the power hitters behind him to run free. He retired hurt at a point where the innings was firmly in the driving seat.

Kunal Gupta’s 42 might look modest in the context of this innings, but it was the innings that made everything else possible — classic number three intelligence in a T20 format.

P D Detonates the Middle Overs

If Kunal built the platform, P D lit the fuse. Arriving at number four, he shifted into a completely different gear from ball one, taking the attack apart with 54 runs off just 17 deliveries. Seven sixes in a knock that lasted barely three overs sent the run rate soaring to a different stratosphere, and at a strike rate of 317.65, this was calculated destruction of the highest order. P D targeted the leg side relentlessly, clearing mid-wicket repeatedly against both Moly and Bipra Sarkar — whose 3-over spell went for 58 — as CC raced from 13 for 2 to 76 for 3 in a blur of violence. P D departed to Aarush Chakraborty, but he had done precisely what was needed.

Tanmay Karmakar: A Hundred for the Ages

And then came Tanmay Karmakar. What followed was nothing short of extraordinary. The left-hander hit a six on his very first delivery and simply did not stop. In 30 balls, he struck a century103 runs, laced with a mind-boggling fifteen sixes at a strike rate of 343.33. Moly (58 in 3 overs), Chiranjit H (29 in 1 over) and Bipra Sarkar all felt the full force of his assault as Tanmay hit the ball into orbits no one had planned for. He retired hurt at 224 for 3, having turned a competitive total into an impossibility. With Vishal Jaiswal (14 off 6) and Shuvo Das keeping the wheels turning at the death, CC closed on 246 for 3 — a statement total on any ground, in any format.

Fifteen sixes. In 30 balls. Tanmay Karmakar just rewrote what is possible in a 13-over tennis ball match.

Shuvo Das and Samrat Strangle the Chase

Chasing 247, Newtown Knights needed a miracle. They got nothing of the sort — thanks in large part to two CC bowlers who set the tone early and never let go. Shuvo Das was the standout performer with the ball all match. Operating with exceptional control, his figures of 3 overs, 15 runs, 2 wickets at an economy of 5.00 were the best of the innings and the best bowling performance on the day. He removed opener Shankar Newtown (over 2.3) and the dangerous captain Avinash (over 5) before they could build any meaningful partnership — and at this run-rate, losing your top two to the same bowler early is a fatal blow.

Samrat was just as damaging, if quieter about it. His 2 overs for just 8 runs and 1 wicket at an economy of 4.00 was the most economical spell of the entire match. When Samrat bowled, the Knights simply could not score — and that pressure forced their batters into errors at the other end, where Vishal Jaiswal (1/29) and SURAJ PRAHLADKA (1/44) capitalised. Despite a defiant 39 from Biswajit (5 sixes off 16 balls) and a late burst from Maddy (23 off 10), the Knights were never in the contest. They finished at 151 for 7, beaten by 95 runs, outplayed in every department.
