In The Fifty by Calcutta Challengers (League Matches), Newtown Kings Legend defended 181/5 to beat Deadly Bulls by 41 runs, holding them to 140/5 after 50 balls each. Ankit Ojha was named Man of the Match for 106 off 26 balls with two fours and fifteen sixes (strike rate 407.69) before retiring hurt. The Bulls did not make it easy: Alok Kumar and Saurav Singh took two wickets each, Anindya Hazra hit 38 off 11 with six sixes, and Atanu finished unbeaten on 48 off 14, but the target of 182 was always a long way off.
Ankit Ojha's 106 Off 26 Powers Newtown Kings Legend
Opening the innings, Ankit Ojha and captain Tublu put on 93 for the first wicket in 25 balls. Tublu hit 27 off 9 (a four and three sixes) before he was caught by Alok Kumar off Kundan Sharma, and Zahid Khan was caught by Vivek Singh off Saurav Singh for a first-ball duck, so the score stayed at 93/2 after 26 balls.
Ankit and Konty then added 60 in 13 balls, taking the score to 153 after 39 balls, when Ankit retired hurt on 106 off 26. His innings contained fifteen sixes, which on their own made 90 of his runs. Konty finished 23 not out off 8 with three sixes.
Late Wickets Fall, but Zaheer Rizvi Finishes With 19 Off 4
The Bulls pulled it back late. Alok Kumar had Vishal Singh Rajput caught by Kundan Sharma and then Hamzad caught by Atanu for ducks, and Saurav Singh had Sumit caught by Kundan Sharma, so three wickets fell for no runs at 162 between the 44th and 46th balls. Zaheer Rizvi then struck 19 not out off 4 balls with three sixes (strike rate 475.00) to take the total from 162 to 181/5. Newtown Kings Legend's innings contained 24 sixes and only three fours, with 6 extras (4 wides and 2 no-balls).
Deadly Bulls' Bowlers: Alok Kumar and Saurav Singh Lead the Fightback
It was an expensive day for the Bulls' attack, with Aditya going for 40 in ten balls (six sixes), Kundan Sharma and Saurav Singh for 38 each, and Golok Bera for 35, but they kept taking wickets. Alok Kumar was the pick with 2/30 and three dot balls, and Saurav Singh took 2/38 including Zahid Khan and Sumit. Kundan Sharma took the wicket of Tublu and held two catches, and Atanu and Vivek Singh also took catches in the field.
Anindya Hazra's 38 Off 11 Gives Deadly Bulls a Quick Start
Chasing 182, Deadly Bulls lost Alok Kumar (0 off 2, caught by Konty off A-Jay Shaun) at 1/1, but Anindya Hazra and Md Junaid answered with big hits. Junaid made 14 off 4 with two sixes before he was run out by Prasanto Bhakat at 40/2 after 12 balls. Anindya hit 38 off 11 with six sixes (strike rate 345.45) and was stumped by wicketkeeper Tublu off Rakesh Roy at 57/3 after 16 balls.
Karan Mahi struggled for 2 off 7 before he was caught by Tublu off Babai at 66/4 after 26 balls, and the Bulls were then dependent on Atanu and Vivek Singh, who added 41 for the fifth wicket in 16 balls. Vivek made 26 off 11 with four sixes before being bowled by Samrat at 107/5 after 42 balls.
Atanu's 48* Keeps Deadly Bulls Fighting
With no chance of the full target, Atanu and captain Hemanshu Singh still added an unbroken 33 in the last eight balls. Atanu finished 48 not out off 14 with five fours and four sixes (strike rate 342.86), the best innings of the Bulls' reply, and Hemanshu Singh added 5 not out off 2. The Bulls' innings had 7 extras (1 bye, 1 no-ball and 5 wides), and the match produced 40 sixes in all, 24 in the first innings and 16 in the second.
Newtown Kings Legend's Bowlers Hold Firm
Prasanto Bhakat kept it tight, going for 22 in ten balls with four dots, while Babai (1/22, five dots), Rakesh Roy (1/23, four dots) and Samrat (1/12 in five balls) all took a wicket, and A-Jay Shaun took 1/38 despite six sixes against him. Zaheer Rizvi conceded 22 in five balls, including four fours.
Looking Ahead
Ankit Ojha's 106 off 26 earned him Man of the Match as Newtown Kings Legend defended 181/5 by 41 runs. Deadly Bulls can take plenty from Anindya Hazra's 38 off 11, Atanu's unbeaten 48 off 14, Alok Kumar's 2/30 and Saurav Singh's 2/38, and the way their bowlers took three wickets in three balls to pull the score back from 153 to 162/5.
